Chronic Diarrhea: Causes and Natural Relief

Chronic diarrhea can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, causing pain, frequent bathroom trips, and potential nutrient deficiencies. While most of us experience occasional diarrhea now and then that resolves on its own, chronic diarrhea requires closer attention and may indicate an underlying issue. By understanding the underlying factors and incorporating natural remedies into your routine, you can take steps towards improving your gut health and overall well-being.

Common Causes of Chronic Diarrhea

Chronic diarrhea can have various causes, ranging from food intolerances to gastrointestinal disorders. Here are some common culprits:

  1. Food intolerances and sensitivities: Certain individuals may experience chronic diarrhea due to specific food intolerances or sensitivities. Lactose intolerance, gluten sensitivity, and fructose malabsorption are examples of conditions that can trigger diarrhea. Identifying and eliminating trigger foods from your diet can help alleviate symptoms and improve gut health.

  2. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis can cause chronic inflammation in the digestive tract, resulting in persistent diarrhea. Managing these conditions often requires a comprehensive approach involving dietary changes, targeted supplements, and stress management.

  3. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): IBS is a chronic disorder characterized by abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, and, often, diarrhea. While the exact cause of IBS is unknown, triggers can include certain foods, stress, and hormonal changes. identifying trigger foods, managing stress levels, and trying certain probiotics may provide relief for some individuals with IBS.

  4. Gut infections: Bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections can lead to chronic diarrhea. Common culprits include Clostridium difficile (C. diff), Salmonella, and Giardia. Natural remedies such as consuming probiotics, incorporating antimicrobial herbs like oregano or garlic into your diet, and staying hydrated can help fight these infections and restore gut health. Be sure to consult a nutrition specialist before starting any herbal remedies.

  5. Medications and medical conditions: Certain medications, such as antibiotics, can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria and lead to chronic diarrhea. Additionally, underlying medical conditions like celiac disease, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism can contribute to ongoing digestive issues. Working closely with your healthcare provider and a nutrition professional is essential for managing these conditions effectively.

Natural Remedies for Chronic Diarrhea

While managing chronic diarrhea often requires a personalized approach, several natural remedies can help alleviate symptoms and support gut health. We’re all different, so what works for some may not work for others. That said, here are some remedies that have been proven to work for many:

  1. Probiotics: Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help restore a healthy balance in the gut. They have been shown to alleviate symptoms of diarrhea and improve overall digestive health. Probiotics can be found in kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and other fermented foods. Alternatively, you can opt for high-quality probiotic supplements. My favorite for diarrhea relief is saccharomyces boulardii – it’s a beneficial yeast that helps restore balance of good bacteria in the gut, works to heal the gut lining, has anti-inflammatory properties, and produces compounds that inhibit growth of harmful bacteria, like C. difficile. Always check with your doctor before starting any new supplement!

  2. Fiber-rich foods: Consuming an adequate amount of fiber can promote regular bowel movements and improve stool consistency. Include fiber-rich foods such as organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes in your diet. It’s important to introduce fiber gradually to prevent exacerbating symptoms. Be mindful that some individuals with certain conditions like IBS may require a more individualized approach to fiber intake.

  3. Herbal teas: Certain herbal teas can have a calming effect on the digestive system, reducing inflammation and soothing an irritated gut. Chamomile tea and peppermint tea are commonly used for their digestive benefits. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties, while peppermint has been shown to relax the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. Sip on these teas throughout the day to aid in symptom relief.

  4. Hydration: Chronic diarrhea can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. It is essential to maintain proper hydration by sipping on water, herbal teas, and clear broths. These fluids can help replenish lost fluids and electrolytes. If symptoms persist or worsen, consider rehydration solutions that contain electrolytes to restore the body’s balance effectively.

  5. Stress management: I can’t stress enough how much chronic stress can exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea. Engaging in stress-reducing activities can have a positive impact on gut health. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga. Regular physical activity, spending time in nature, and engaging in hobbies can also help alleviate stress. Consider incorporating stress management techniques into your daily routine to support not only digestion, but overall well-being.

  6. Elimination diets: Identifying trigger foods through an elimination diet can be beneficial. A good place to start is by cutting out common culprits such as dairy, gluten, and refined sugars. These foods will need to be eliminated for at least 21 days.  After that time, slowly reintroduce these foods one at a time, over several days. Watch for any symptoms that come back to identify any triggers that may be contributing to chronic diarrhea.

  7. Mindful eating: This is SUCH a big deal, not just for diarrhea, but for any digestive distress. Practicing mindful eating techniques can enhance digestion and potentially alleviate symptoms of chronic diarrhea. Chew your food thoroughly, eat in a relaxed environment, and pay attention to your body’s signals of hunger and fullness. By taking time to enjoy and savor your meals, you can support optimal digestion.

  8. Gut-supportive supplements: Certain supplements may aid in healing and supporting gut health. Glutamine, which can help repair the intestinal lining, and omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties are two of the best! Again, be sure to consult your healthcare professional before starting any supplements.

By incorporating natural remedies such as probiotics, fiber-rich foods, herbal teas, and stress management techniques, you can support your gut health and overall well-being. Remember, what works for one person may not work for another, and healing does not happen quickly. Patience and persistence are the key to finding finding the right approach for your body!

Chronic diarrhea can have various causes and finding the right approach to manage it requires understanding the underlying factors.
