I was exhausted all the time and couldn’t shake the feeling of not actually being sick, but never quite feeling 100%. I assumed it was a function of life with four small kids and getting older…turns out I had rheumatoid arthritis.
I was terrified.
I didn’t have a clue what it was, nor did I know anything about autoimmune disease. I rarely took Advil for a headache, but was immediately given several major medications and told I’d have to take them for life to avoid any permanent joint damage. Oh, and there was no known cause or cure.
After the initial shock dissipated…and it took a while…I started researching RA and discovered how closely autoimmune disease is related to diet and stress. At the time, as a mom of four young kids, with an entrepreneur husband, I felt the stress part was inevitable, so I focused on diet. With the help of a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor, I identified several food sensitivities causing inflammation in my body (magnifying the RA symptoms). I implemented the changes she suggested, eliminated foods causing the sensitivities (dairy, gluten and sugar) and it completely changed my life. I was floored at the results. I went from feeling completely exhausted all the time and thinking this was just how my life was going to be from now on, to feeling truly healthy for the first time in years. It didn’t happen overnight — it was four to six months before I started to notice any improvements — but the improvements just continued as time went on…despite being told nutrition had no effect on the disease and medication was my only option to ensure I could continue being the mom who always played with her kids.
That was eight years ago and so much has changed since then. I’ve managed to keep my disease activity completely under control by sticking to some basic guidelines and recently adding supplements/herbs to my routine. My new rheumatologist has actually decreased my medication several times – not the norm for rheumatoid arthritis patients! I’ve also implemented similar changes into my family’s routine and have seen incredible improvements in their physical and mental health. It took them a little while to get on board…as you would expect…but they can see the difference these changes are making to their lives.
I am fascinated by how much nutrition and lifestyle choices impact our health and how much control we have over it. I wanted to learn more and be able to teach it to others, so I became a holistic nutrition consultant. It has completely changed my life and that of my family and I’m excited to teach others how it can work for them.
