8 Yoga Poses to Boost Digestion & Banish Bloating

Published on: 03/29/2025

Did you know that there are specific yoga poses that can help you boost digestion and banish bloating? Practicing yoga for digestion can help relieve gas, reduce inflammation, and improve overall gut function. Just 15 minutes a day can provide instant relief while also supporting long-term digestive health. Wow!

Proper digestion is essential for optimal health. The body must break down and absorb nutrients effectively to prevent inflammation, poor gut health, and even autoimmune conditions. Yoga can support this process naturally.

From gentle twists to deep stretches, these eight yoga poses can help relieve bloating, support digestion, and promote overall well-being.

1. Knees-to-Chest Pose (Apanasana)

A simple yet effective pose, Knees-to-Chest offers almost instant relief by applying gentle pressure to the abdomen.

How to do it:

  • Lie on your back and draw both knees toward your chest.
  • Wrap your arms around your knees, holding them in place.
  • Breathe deeply, feeling the gentle compression on your belly.

This pose helps release trapped gas and stimulates digestion.

2. Supine Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana)

A great pose for detoxification, this gentle twist massages the abdominal organs, aiding digestion and elimination.

How to do it:

  • Lie on your back and draw one knee to your chest.
  • Cross it over to the opposite side while extending your other arm outward.
  • Hold and repeat on the other side.

Think of this as wringing out a wet towel—your digestive system being the towel and toxins the excess water being released!

3. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana)

This pose stretches and stimulates the abdominal organs, promoting circulation and digestive function.

How to do it:

  • Lie on your back with knees bent and feet hip-width apart.
  • Press your feet and shoulders into the mat as you lift your hips toward the ceiling.
  • Hold for a few breaths before lowering slowly.

4. Cat-Cow Pose (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana)

This dynamic movement sequence encourages relaxation, which is key for optimal digestion.

How to do it:

  • Start on all fours, aligning wrists under shoulders and knees under hips.
  • Inhale, arch your back, lift your tailbone, and gaze up (Cow Pose).
  • Exhale, round your spine, tuck your chin, and pull your belly in (Cat Pose).
  • Flow through several rounds, coordinating breath with movement.

This gentle massage stimulates the intestines and enhances digestion.

5. Extended Puppy Pose (Uttana Shishosana)

Perfect for post-meal bloating relief, this stretch releases abdominal tension.

How to do it:

  • Start on all fours and walk your hands forward, keeping hips aligned over knees.
  • Lower your chest toward the mat, stretching your arms forward.
  • Hold for several breaths.

6. Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

This classic pose helps stimulate sluggish digestion and relieves trapped gas.

How to do it:

  • Begin on all fours, tuck your toes, and lift your hips toward the ceiling.
  • Press your heels toward the floor, forming an inverted V shape.
  • Hold and breathe deeply.

7. Half Gas Relief Pose (Ardha Pavanamuktasana)

Yes, this is a real pose—and it works! It stimulates the intestines and encourages gas release.

How to do it:

  • Lie on your back and hug one knee to your chest while extending the opposite leg.
  • Hold, then switch sides.
  • Expect some digestive movement—this pose gets things moving!

8. Savasana (Corpse Pose)

My favourite pose! The ultimate relaxation pose, Savasana activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which enhances digestion.

How to do it:

  • Lie on your back with arms and legs extended.
  • Close your eyes and focus on deep, slow breathing.
  • Stay here for at least a few minutes.

How Long Should You Hold Each Pose?

Aim to hold each pose for at least five deep breaths—the longer, the better! This allows your body to fully experience the digestive benefits of each movement.
