I know I say this over and over, but it’s worth repeating: achieving optimal digestion is key to overall health. It directly impacts nutrient absorption, immune function, and even mood regulation. While a healthy diet forms the foundation of good digestion (and is ALWAYS the first place to start!), sometimes we need some additional support.
My own digestion is quite well balanced now, but I spent many years during which that was far from the case! Bloating and constipation were the big ones I suffered with. I followed my own advice and did a complete overhaul of my diet, but there were times when I needed some extra support. In this post, I’m going to give you the details about my own most-used supplements for digestion.
Top Supplements for Digestive Support
There are some “tried and true” supplements I used when healing and they’re still staples in my supplement stash for the odd time when I need them. Each one is backed not only by my personal experience, but by science as well.
- Magnesium: Magnesium is often referred to as the “relaxation mineral” due to its ability to support muscle relaxation, including the muscles of the digestive tract. It plays a crucial role in maintaining proper bowel function and preventing constipation. Additionally, magnesium can help regulate stomach acid levels, which is essential for optimal digestion. Incorporating a magnesium supplement, such as magnesium citrate or magnesium glycinate, can support overall digestive health and regularity. (Little extra bonus…it can work wonders for hot flashes!)
- Peppermint: My absolute favorite! Peppermint has a long history of use in traditional medicine for its digestive benefits. Its active compound, menthol, possesses anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties that can help soothe digestive discomfort, including bloating, gas, and indigestion. Peppermint oil supplements is excellent for promoting digestive ease and comfort, especially after meals. I don’t leave home without it…and now, neither do my kids!
- Digestive Bitters: Bitter herbs have been used for centuries to stimulate digestion and support liver function. Digestive bitters contain bitter-tasting herbs like gentian, dandelion, and artichoke, These herbs are so great because they trigger the body to increase production of digestive enzymes and bile. This enhances nutrient absorption and reduces bloating. Taking digestive bitters before meals can prime the digestive system for optimal function and promote overall digestive wellness. I even find it helpful after meals when I feel that I’ve eaten too much.
- Saccharomyces Boulardii: Another one I don’t leave home without! Saccharomyces boulardii is a yeast strain that can help restore balance to the gut microbiota. It has been extensively studied for its ability to support gastrointestinal health, particularly in cases of leaky gut, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Saccharomyces boulardii supplements can help maintain a healthy gut environment by inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria and supporting the integrity of the intestinal barrier.
- Digestive Enzymes: Digestive enzymes are essential for breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body. Factors such as aging, stress, and certain medical conditions can impair the body’s natural enzyme production, leading to digestive discomfort and nutrient deficiencies. Supplementing with digestive enzyme blends containing proteases, lipases, and amylases can enhance digestion and alleviate symptoms like bloating, gas, and heartburn.
- Hydrochloric Acid (HCl): Hydrochloric acid, stomach acid, plays a crucial role in initiating the digestive process by breaking down food and activating digestive enzymes. Some individuals have insufficient stomach acid production, which impairs digestion and nutrient malabsorption. Supplementing with HCl capsules containing betaine hydrochloride can help optimize stomach acid levels and improve overall digestion. This is especially for those experiencing symptoms of low stomach acid, such as acid reflux or bloating after meals.
When it Comes to Supplements, Quality Really Counts!
Quality is key when it comes to supplements! Rigorous testing is essential for safety, to eliminate contaminants and ensure purity. Efficacy of the supplement is maintained through proper formulation and manufacturing processes. This guaranteeing the presence of clinically proven active ingredients in appropriate concentrations – so they work the way they’re supposed to! High-quality supplements avoid unnecessary fillers and additives that offer little nutritional value and may cause adverse reactions. Compliance with manufacturing standards ensures consistency and adherence to regulatory requirements, fostering consumer trust and confidence. Simply put, investing in quality supplements supports positive health outcomes, complementing a balanced diet and lifestyle while minimizing potential risks associated with low-quality products.
