The sweet lure of sugar is hard to resist. It’s a mainstay in our diets, found in countless processed foods, beverages, and treats. Yet, as delightful as it may taste, the over-consumption of sugar can have a sour impact on our digestive health. I’m forever bringing up our microbiome – the bustling collection of microorganisms within our digestive system. These microorganisms play a vital role in our overall health. There are “good” bacteria that assist with digestion and nutrient absorption, and then there are the “bad” ones that can lead to issues.

Excessive sugar consumption can disrupt the delicate balance of the microbiome, favoring the “bad” bacteria over the “good.”  In simple terms, sugar feeds the bad bacteria, causing imbalance. This imbalance, referred to as gut dysbiosis, can lead to a host of digestive problems, including gas, bloating, and irregular bowel movements.

The gut microbiome is like a garden. It needs the right nutrients to thrive and maintain a harmonious balance. When we overload it with sugar, we’re essentially feeding the weeds that disrupt this delicate ecosystem.

Besides making us feel horrible, this rollercoaster of highs and crashes can have deeper consequences. This, in turn, can lead to metabolic imbalances, which can have a direct impact on digestive health.
