We’re baaaack!
After a COVID-induced abrupt ending to our first season, we’re back at it again for Season 2! Although we’re a little “rusty”, to say the least, we’re excited to get going again with more awesome topics and info for you!
That said, let’s get started with Episode 10! (Holy Cow, double digits!)
Today, we’re talking supplements!
There are OH-SO-MANY of those dang things! And also OH-SO-MANY opinions about them! How the heck is the average person supposed to know what to believe?!
Here’s a little hint…listen to Episode 10!
I’m a firm believer in the importance and effectiveness of supplements, but that wasn’t always the case. My opinion used to be that as long as I ate a healthy diet, supplements were an unnecessary expense. I’ve since learned so much more about supplements. They’ve made a huge difference in my mental and physical wellness and I feel strongly that they’re a necessary component of optimal health…and I am on a continuous mission to move myself further in the direction of optimal health!
In this episode, we have a general discussion about supplements and some of the key things to know about them. As always, the first step toward optimal health is with a whole foods diet. But it’s simply not possible to get all of the nutrients we need from diet alone – which is where supplements come in handy. Supplements can provide additional nutrients, be they vitamins, minerals, herbs, botanicals, or amino acids, the optimum amounts of which can be difficult to get from food alone – even with a near perfect diet. And I am fascinated at how effective those nutrients can be for so many of the most common health issues we deal with – digestive upset, PMS, anxiety, menopause, sleep troubles – to name just a few!
As we discuss in this episode, if and when you do decide to start taking any supplement, it’s SO important to be aware that QUALITY MATTERS! In most cases, you get what you pay for and this is especially true of supplements. Two important things to pay attention to when buying supplements are:
- Nutrient “form”: There are different forms of different nutrients and some forms are more readily used and absorbed by the body. When buying a supplement, you want to buy the most useful forms of the nutrients…otherwise you’ll be flushing money down the toilet…literally. If your body can’t absorb or use it, it’s going to excrete it.
- Additives/Fillers: You want to buy supplements with as few additional ingredients as possible – often labeled on the bottle as “non-medicinal ingredients”. Most of the common supplement brands we find at drug or grocery stores contain a whole lotta junk that just isn’t good for your body. I tend to think of it as being like packaged or processed food…so many fillers and additives (different forms of sugar, toxic coloring, irritants, etc) that are linked to inflammation, allergies, mood issues and ADD/ADHD in children – things we’re trying to alleviate with supplements! Do yourself a favor and buy professional grade supplements – they cost a little more, but it’s worth every penny.
