Easy Trick to Ease Anxiety or Panic

Published on: 02/25/2025

Anxiety and panic attacks can feel overwhelming, as though your body is stuck in a cycle of stress and fear. When panic strikes, it can seem impossible to control it. But what if I told you there was an easy trick to quickly calm your nervous system and shift out of an anxious or panicked state? The answer lies in gratitude.

The Science Behind Anxiety and Gratitude

Anxiety and gratitude activate entirely different parts of your nervous system. When you feel anxious, your body is operating under the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), also known as the “fight-or-flight” response. This system is designed to keep you alert in times of danger, flooding your body with stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. While this response is helpful in true emergencies, being stuck in it due to chronic stress or panic is not good for the body.

On the other hand, gratitude activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), also known as the “rest-and-digest” system. This part of your nervous system is responsible for relaxation, healing, and recovery. It lowers your heart rate, reduces blood pressure, and promotes digestion. The key takeaway? You cannot be in both states at the same time. If you shift into gratitude, you are actively moving away from anxiety and into a calmer, more peaceful state. The best part is that it not only works, but it’s super simple!

How to Use Gratitude to Quickly Stop Anxiety or Panic

Practicing gratitude is one of the simplest and fastest ways to shift out of anxiety or panic. When you intentionally focus on what you’re grateful for, your brain and body start to calm down almost instantly.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Pause and take a deep breath. This helps signal to your body that you’re shifting gears.
  2. Think of 3-5 things you’re grateful for. They don’t have to be big – in fact, small joys are often the most powerful.
  3. Say them out loud or write them down. This reinforces the message to your brain.
  4. Visualize and feel the gratitude. The more you embody the feeling, the more effective it becomes.

Examples of Simple Gratitudes

If you’re feeling anxious, here are a few things you could focus on:

  • A sunny day. Feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin or seeing a bright sky can instantly lift your mood.
  • Your morning coffee or tea. The comforting routine and aroma can bring a sense of peace.
  • A good conversation with a friend. Knowing you have people who care about you is deeply reassuring.
  • A comfortable bed. Something as simple as having a cozy space to rest can be grounding.
  • Fresh air. Stepping outside and taking a deep breath can help reset your mind.

The beauty of gratitude is that it’s always accessible. No matter where you are or what you’re going through, you can pause and find something, however small, to be grateful for.

Why Stress and Gut Health Are Connected

Practicing gratitude is so powerful for calming the nervous system and managing stress that it’s included as a separate lesson in my Gut Reset Solution program. Why? Because stress and gut health are deeply intertwined. Chronic anxiety and panic don’t just affect your mind—they impact your digestion, microbiome, hormones, immune system, and even your ability to absorb nutrients.

When you’re in a constant state of stress (sympathetic mode), your body prioritizes survival over digestion. This can lead to:

  • Poor digestion and nutrient absorption
  • Increased inflammation in the gut
  • Imbalanced gut bacteria
  • Exacerbation of digestive disorders like IBS, bloating, and constipation
  • Hormone issues
  • Immune system dysfunction…and so much more!

By learning to shift out of anxiety and into gratitude, you’re not only calming your mind but also supporting your gut and every other part of your body. If you struggle with frequent anxiety or panic attacks, focusing on your gut is one of the most powerful ways to create long-term relief.
